Some instances where PPF is not the best fit are if you are totally ok with rock chip damage, its rarely driven and you won't be upset if some damage occurs where PPF could protect it. Customize a PPF service for just the bumper/Headlights for a more budget friendly option. We recommend PPF to be a form of protection for several years! peel it off as needed if damage occurs. Purchasing a new vehicle is so exciting! We are here to help you not just take care of the vehicle with detailing, but preserve that vehicle. May that be with PPF, Ceramic Coating or an assortment of both. The answer to the question really comes down to what you value with your vehicle. Both forms of paint protection are effective in their own way.

Ceramic Coatings provide high gloss, easy maintenance for years of protection. PPF will protect better against rock chips. The big question is, do you care about rock chips? Do your driving habits call for that level of protection? Read on to learn our point of view based on what our customers say.

Can You Do PPF After a Ceramic Coating?

In short, Yes you can. Its happened many times before. A customer comes in for ceramic coating and realizes they want PPF on the front end. All the prep work included in a typical PPF Prep process is going to be sufficient for also removing the ceramic coating. Polishing is always included in a PPF service mainly to strip any sealant, coatings from the surface providing better adhesion. So, yes you can do a PPF Service after the vehicle has been ceramic coated, but that coating will have to be removed.

I Can Only Budget For One or The Other at This Time

If one of your expectations for Paint Protection is protecting againdt rock chips, DO PPF First!! Once you get a rock chip, it'll never be the same. Touch ups are only magnified under a PPF Film. If you don't care about a rock chip here and there, then sure...maybe PPF isnt going to be the best ROI for you. But don't say we didn't warn you!

Having a Ceramic Coated Vehicle is great when it comes to taking care of your paint. It can be a far simpler task than cleaning a car that is uncoated. Why? Because Ceramic Coatings have great beading capabilities & “release properties.” However, even with a ceramic coating, it is important to maintain proper methods for the best result without imposing any unnecessary swirling & defects in the finish.

Why Is Proper Maintenance So Important?

By properly maintaining your Ceramic Coated vehicle, you will be prolonging the protection abilities of the coating. The better maintained the coating is, the better it can protect your car’s paint. In addition, the Ceramic Coating will not degrade if cared for properly. Over time, Ceramic Coatings are made to degrade slowly over a long period of time. While there are factors that can speed up the failure of the ceramic coating such as the buildup of contaminants, never washing it, improper chemicals, automatic car washes, etc., it is possible to extend the life of the coating beyond its expected duration.

Ceramic Coating Makes Cleaning Much Easier!

This Tacoma was brought in for a full service to clean up the debris from a long road trip from San Diego to Utah, Vegas, and back. Through many off-road trails, this truck saw all environmental elements over the past couple of weeks. The paint was dramatically easier to clean as opposed to an uncoated vehicle. Dirt no longer wants to stick to the paint, bug guts won’t bake in and etch the clearcoat, and the sun won’t damage the clearcoat in the hot sun.

As a professional Detailer, it is my job to fully cleanse this paint safely, without imposing swirling & scratches, rehydrate the coating and hand the keys back with the paint looking as good as the day it was coated. Game on!

How to Safely Cleanse The Paint

My process for this Tacoma was unique and took a few extra steps than just a “simple wash.” I loaded my foam cannon with PH balanced Off-road cleaner (emulsifier) and began to foam down the paint with thick foam. This works to quickly break down the dirt that is on the surface, reducing the amount of dirt left on the paint for my wash mitts in a later stage. I proceeded to foam down and pre-rinse the truck twice before making contact with my mitts.

Washing With Mitts

My third foam down was with a lighter detergent from Owner’s Pride (Eco Wash Concentrate). This is the soap I choose to use to lubricate the surface upon contact with the wash mitts. Utilizing a 2-bucket method (one rinse, one wash), move throughout the panels doing only one pass, working top to bottom, thoroughly rinsing mitts in between panels. This will dramatically limit surface swirling, light marring, and even scratches.

Drying Aid & Sealant

The final stages of the paint include thoroughly rinsing the paint free of dirt, and drying the panels with my ultra soft drying towel and Ceramic+ Drying Aid. This product lubricates the panel as well as adds a light layer of protection, rehydrating the coating as I dry. Once the panel is dry, I love to follow it up with a final wipe spray with Owner’s Pride Ceramic Detailer. This product is amazing! Will add a few months of protection to the coating, a crazy gloss, and great slickness back to the coating. Especially after a long road trip, this step is highly recommended.

Final Result:

Owner of the vehicle was stoked to have his truck back in shape after a long road trip. The paint was insanely dirty with Utah Clay and was beyond a “quick wash at home.” The paint was left flawless with no swirling added to the paint, the ceramic coating rehydrated and ready for the road again.

Spanning across a spectrum of one to seven year coatings, Ceramic Coatings are a highly concentrated form of SiO2 or SiC (which is the fundamental constituent of glass). Ceramic Coatings will reject UV Damage that cause fading and premature breakdown of the clear coat. UV Damage is the common cause of clear coat failure. The UV rays break down traditional waxes and sealants fairly quickly. Ceramic Coatings are far more durable and reject UV rays.

Swirl / Scratch Resistance

The ceramic coating is a much harder layer of protection than factory clear coat. Any swirling that may be caused over the life of the coating likely has not reached the actual paint, it’s in the coating itself. Protects from contaminants, bird Dropping & sap

Overtime, contaminants become embedded in the clear coat. Contaminants include iron fallout which is accumulated over time from sitting outside and being exposed to environmental elements. If left unmaintained, these contaminants rust and become very harmful to the clear coat. In addition, bird droppings are very acidic and etch the clear coat permanently. How to Maintain a Ceramic Coated Vehicle

“How do I maintain my ceramic coated vehicle?” is one of the most common questions I get on a day-to-day basis when working with my customers. It makes sense! Investing a sum of money into getting your vehicle paint corrected & ceramic coated leaves some people with concerns on how to properly take care of the paint to preserve the life of the investment and maintain the coatings durability. As always, I’m happy to help guide you in maintaining your own vehicle if you choose not to use Shine Division Detailing maintenance options.

What to Avoid

For starters, let’s go over what should be avoided: Avoid automatic car washes, abrasive tools, brushes, and abrasive mitts that can harm the paint. Be mindful of the products you are using…Always use PH neutral soaps & emulsifiers for the paint or any ceramic coated surfaces as it could harm the coating. Yes, Ceramic Coatings are resistant to acids & bases (PH Scale). However, “resistance” does not mean it is “unaffected” by the chemical. The ceramic coating is certainly doing its job in protecting the paint, but extreme acids and bases can prematurely break down the ceramic coating. Where Do I Start

When maintaining any vehicle, start with the wheels & chassis components. Refrain from getting the paint wet until you are done with the wheels and ready to proceed with the paint cleanse. I recommend all-purpose cleaners for the wheels & tires (Iron removers in more heavy-duty cleaning / heavy brake dust). Make sure to use soft bristle brushes to agitate the product for best results.

Moving on to the paint…be aware of the environment you are working in. I recommend working in a cool, shaded area. Your process may vary depending on sun exposure, paint surface temp, etc. Let’s assume you are in a shaded area and the paint temperature is cool.

Before pre-rinsing, I like to start by spraying Owner’s Pride Eco Wash diluted in a pump sprayer or a foam cannon. Eco Wash is an emulsifying agent that will begin to break down the dirt resulting in a safer wash process. You can use another emulsifying soap in place of Eco Wash. Allow the product to work for a minute then proceed to thoroughly pre-rinsing the vehicle to remove as much of the grime as possible.

(If the vehicle is only lightly dusty, you can skip the emulsifier and move right to pre-rinse).

Now, to prepare for the wash process, get your two buckets (Wash & Rinse), with quality grit guards installed at the bottom. Dilute Eco wash in the wash bucket to its recommended dilution ratio.

spray on another round of eco wash for lubrication. Using high quality wash mitts soaked in Eco wash solution, move through the paint one panel at a time, continually rinsing the mitts in your rinse bucket and re-saturating them in eco wash. Work from the top of the vehicle, down to the bottom and never bring the mitt back up onto the paint after washing the lower sections where there is heavier buildup. Repeat this process until the entire vehicle is washed.

Drying The Paint

Now that the vehicle is clean, take your high quality, large drying towel with your favorite drying aid (Mine is OP Ceramic+), and lightly sprits ceramic+ on each panel. A little bit goes a long way, so don’t overdo it. This product will help speed up the drying process, will lubricate the panel to limit marring & swirling, and will spread an even layer of sealant for added protection.

From here, you can call it complete, or take the extra step to level out any light water streaking. Take a new ultra-plush towel and lightly sprits ceramic detailer onto the towel and a little sprits on the panel and work it in with very light pressure and quick arm speed. Flip the towel, one quick wipe and its completely hydrated!

The paint has now been safely cleansed utilizing techniques that will maintain the flawless finish, boost the ceramic coating protection, and forever keep that crazy gloss!

My final steps consist of final wipe on the wheels, condition trim, dress the tires, clean windows inside & out, interior vac, wipe down etc.

While this is my favorite method of safely cleaning the paint, there are other safe alternatives in case you lack the resources or the environment to utilize these methods. If you have any questions regarding the process, feel free to reach out.

This is my entry Level Ceramic Coating Option offering far more durable protection than any wax or sealant. This is an SiC Formulated product which creates a semi-permanent bond with the clear coat through a cross-linking process. This provides highly durable protection against the Sun UV Rays, and all environmental elements. Dirt will no longer stick to the paint and will result in a much cleaner surface with a rich gloss.

Paint needed some extensive prep work prior to polishing. This truck lives next to the beach and is taken off road quite often. This results in the paint being heavily contaminated with iron particles. Through our decon process, the chemical digs deep down into the surface and dissolves those iron particles. As seen in the photos above. The chemical reacts with the surface by turning purple. The more contaminants there are, the more of a reaction there will be.

– Steps included: 2 stage foam cannon paint cleanse:

We foamed the paint down with an emulsifier to breakdown the dirt chemically. This is much safer than going at it with wash mists and imposing swirling in the paint. Once the emulsification was complete, we continued on with our second foam wash and 2-bucket wash method.

Next step, I noticed the paint was heavily contaminated from sitting outside in the elements while the sun has been baking it in. With a iron chemical decon and clay process, all bonded contaminants were removed. At this point, the paint was smooth and free of all impurities.

Next step is to do a DA High Gloss Polish. This drastically improved clarity, creating that high gloss finish, removing any marring and it also serves as a base coat for our second stage protection.

we can move forward to applying the ceramic based sealant. I chose to use Owner’s Pride Ceramic Detailer for extremely high gloss finish, very slick ad UV Resistant.

Next stage we condition all exterior plastics, rubber, clean glass inside and out, and finish it up with a light interior clean up which entails and vacuum and wipedown.
